South Hill Park

James Dale Architects worked in collaboration with Hodgson Gabb Studio on the design and construction of this bespoke oak framed and glass side infill extension for a small garden flat in Hampstead, north London.

In keeping with our company ethos to ‘make’ we were involved in all aspects of the design cycle of this project, from the initial concepts to fabricating the unit onsite. This hands on approach also allowed the design aspirations for the scheme to be met within the extremely tight budget.

The extension is oak framed, with frameless glazed doors and roof which creates a striking, contemporary glass cube onto the original dwelling. The bespoke frames for the unit were fabricated onsite and installed by James Dale Architects and Hodgson Gabb Studio, along with installing new pine parquet floor and bespoke furniture.

As the site was totally enclosed it added a few constraints to the design and build, as it meant all materials and machinery had to be brought through the house or through neighbouring properties.
